Dancing poppies, Persian archers and lost civilizations, acclaimed artist Wendy Artin invites you to marvel at all that and more in her latest exhibition, Flowers, Friezes and Frescoes. Her works capture fleeting moments, like poppies in the spring, and the timeless elegance of ancient ruins.
Featuring 50 exquisite pieces, Artin’s delicate mastery of watercolor brings ancient and ephemeral beauty to life, from the 1st-century BC Roman frescoes of Livia’s Garden to the vibrant Persian archers from the Royal Palace of Darius I.
“Watercolor is a miracle where pigments drift as water evaporates until the paint settles in the right place to reveal the image. Whether I’m painting watercolors of frescoes, enameled brick tiles, ruins or red poppies, I want the viewer to feel their love is rekindled for the subject,” said Artin. More about the exhibition…

Wendy Artin’s 2023 exhibition Livia's Garden. Rome-based, Boston-born artist Wendy Artin brings the past to life with her new collection of radiant watercolors based on frescos from. Classical Rome. Complimenting the dense paintings of ancient gardens are light, almost abstract, sanguine nudes of female figure models.
At the heart of the show, chirping colorful birds play in the 1st century BC frescos of gardens inspired by the Villa of Livia, housed at the Museo Nazionale Romano di Palazzo Massimo in Rome. Packed with fragmented layers of color and shallow perspectives, the painted gardens feel ancient yet contemporary.
"Livia’s garden is a soft and wild paradise. Surrounding myself with painted nature has been lovely, challenging and liberating,” said Artin. “But frescoes are made with opaque paint, often with light forms on top of a dark background, which you cannot do with transparent watercolors. I tried to make my paintings as beautiful as the frescoes that inspired them, but different, allowing the watercolor to flow as celestial washes of Mediterranean skies, touched by ancient ochres.” More on the exhibition…

In her newest exhibition Rome-based American artist Wendy Artin offers us the beauty of the human body with a series of forty shimmering watercolors and ten ink line drawings. By an almost alchemical process Artin transforms water and pigment into breathtaking image. Flesh and Stone ranges in subject matter from classical antiquity to the contemporary nude, celebrating the transformative nature of art where stone becomes flesh and flesh becomes divine.
“The greatest moments are when the paintings seem to magically make themselves, when the tiny clumps of pigment suspended in water settle in just the right place to describe the curve of a thigh, of a belly, and then dry. I chanced upon beauty, finding it in a sculpture across the room from the one I planned to paint, in the unexpected return of a favorite model, in what I could coax out of a puddle of watercolor on the paper,” said Artin. American watercolorist Wendy Artin finds joy in the visual in a series of daring pieces for her new show, titled Flow. The artist is inspired by the sky and the soil, the ethereal and the earthy, the humble and the heavenly in over 70 watercolours, all on white paper.
Her subjects include fruits, vegetables and shellfish from her local Roman market, the city’s pine trees against its azure skies, urban wild flowers, beloved pencil stubs, old toys, and celestial statues of angels and injured amazons. More about the exhibition…

In Wendy Artin’s exhibition, Révèle, the American artist explores absence, beauty and the corporeal in her representation of the human form. This exhibition brings together 57 pieces in watercolour, charcoal and chalk on white or brown paper capturing both live models and statues, all caught in a fleeting glance that belies stunning craft. The work reflects an ongoing conversation around stone and flesh that Artin has pursued as one of the world’s most brilliant watercolourists, while pushing her into new technical achievements. Wendy Artin’s Exhibition, AD LIBITUM, presents Rome – large scale charcoal drawings of the River God by Bernini from the fountains in Piazza Navona, atmospheric sepia Roman landscapes, and still life. In medium and small-scale format sizes, Wendy Artin has painted views and landscapes of Rome and Villa Adriana that will be on exhibited until December 9th. Wendy Artin’s new exhibition, HERE TODAY - Athens, Rome, Paris, London, New York, features vibrant, spirited paintings of fugitive urban walls. Beautifully stained stencils, torn posters, printouts, spray-painted marks, drips, cracks, rust, hinges, beloved faces peering out of flat walls: these urban accumulations occur in many streets in many cities. We often walk by oblivious to their accidental beauty—but with her forty-plus watercolor paintings of captivating wallscapes, Artin invites us to pause and contemplate the ephemeral, the vulnerable, the fragile. From intimate portrayals of paintbrushes awash with color to monochromatic ink-like paintings of the figure and classical statuary, the delicate and powerful images of From the Roman Studio waver and melt between abstract mark- making and impressionistic realism. Reflecting pleasure and nostalgia, Artin’s paintbrush watercolors are a tribute to years of projects of growing a family in Rome. Each spot of paint on the handle of a well-worn brush evokes a joyous moment: the starry blue sky surrounding the children’s beds, the gigantic green cardboard Christmas tree, the brilliant white Roman sunlight on the walls... The images are personal relics of the sort that are found in all our tool closets; they are a simple and profound appreciation of the present as it reveals all of the traces of the past. Age, for Artin, is to be relished. More about the exhibition…

Wendy Artin’s exhibition entitled THE PARTHENON FRIEZES, at Gurari Collections, is a demonstration of patience, endurance, visual insight and painting mastery. Galleried at the British Museum, the Parthenon sculptures enjoy world renown for their representational beauty, conflict of a storied past, and their sheer magnitude of sculptural presence. The large monochromatic watercolor paintings in this new series are life-size in scale so as to best evoke the splendor of this ancient parade. More about the exhibition…

In her continuing exploration of the human figure, Artin has recently been focusing on life-sized charcoal drawings of the nude. These large-scale works are complemented in the exhibition by figurative watercolors as well as an assortment of landscapes and still life paintings. “These nudes are my models eternalized in an instant of immobility, as epic statues,” says Artin. “I try to have the mark move over the paper as though it’s moving over the surface of the figure. There are no lines; the edges need to always be able to breathe. I love the way the charcoal clings to the surface of the paper.” More about the exhibition…

The exhibit's focus is a series of elegant sepia watercolors of marble statues of athletes from the Foro Italico in Rome, Italy. These masterful watercolors of the 1920s Italian "supermen" are a logical segue in Artin's exploration of the ideal male form, from Greco-Roman heros to the fluid marble forms of Bernini, to the lithe bodies of the young Roman dancers she has engaged as models. Other watercolors on display are a winsome series of childhood toys, delectable still lifes, and sanguine nudes. More about the exhibition…

Femmine, Artin ́s fourth annual exhibition at Gurari, features her most personal work yet. In Italian "femmine" means "female," and the show is a passionate, patient, and intimate celebration of just that: of what it is to be female, to be a woman artist viewing a woman ́s body during a very special time in the artist ́s life. The centerpiece of Figures is a cycle of large-scale drawings that Artin worked on this past year while she was a Visiting Artist at the American Academy of Rome. The figures in question are life-size charcoal renderings of classical statuary, among them such cherished pieces as the Discus Thrower, the head of Medusa, Atleta (viewed from both the front and the side), and a striking Dionesius. Wendy Artin delivers fecundity and abundance with fifty exquisite new watercolors. Cornucopia is an offering of hand-picked, beautiful moments: curious blossoms and ripening fruit, carefully selected by Artin or offered to her by family and friends, surround centuries-old statues of nymphs, maenads, and gods. Also on display will be a smattering of work from past exhibits, including figures and watercolors of walls.
Benoît Gréan, composer of the seven-poem suite which accompanies the show catalogue, describes Artin's work as: “the miracle of the watercolorist’s gesture, who, throwing water and pigment on paper, births a fruit, a flower, a nude, a landscape.” More about the exhibition…
