Alexander the Great
Francois Perrier (1594-1649), French painter, draftsman, and printmaker, was born in Burgundy and later frequently signed his engravings Franciseus Perrier Burgundus. Perrier went to Rome before 1625; when he returned to France a few years later, he played a large part in introducing the grand style of the Roman Baroque into France. Among his pupils was Charles Le Brun.
Drawn by Rome’s rich classical history, Perrier returned to Rome and worked there for a decade from 1635 to 1645. He produced his most famous works from this period, “Segmenta statuarium,” one hundred etchings representing antique Roman statues, and “Icone et segmenta illustrium,” a series of etchings representing antique reliefs in 1645. Both of these collections contributed over the following two centuries to the diffusion of antique models in the Western world. Perrier also engraved the entire decoration of the Farnesina in Rome by Raphael.
Our collection contains many etchings from “Segmenta statuarium,” and a wide selection of etchings from “Icone et segmenta illustrium.”
